Alkagesta has announced the establishment of a new biofuels trading desk in Geneva, according to PR Newswire. This initiative is intended to enhance the company's European presence and demonstrate its commitment to the worldwide energy transition. The move reflects Alkagesta's ambition to support the expanding market for sustainable fuels.
The company is capitalising on Geneva's long-standing reputation as a significant international centre for commodity trading. Europe is continuing its shift from fossil fuels towards renewable and low-carbon alternatives, a trend Alkagesta aims to support with its new operation.
PR Newswire reported that the European biofuels market is projected to reach nearly $59 billion by 2030, with an 11% compound annual growth rate. Within this, the European biodiesel segment was valued at $19.5 billion in 2024 and is expected to exceed $32 billion by 2033.
Globally, the biofuels sector was approximately $99.5 billion in 2023 and is anticipated to surpass $200 billion by 2030. Geneva offers a unique ecosystem, combining trade finance, legal expertise, risk management, insurance, and logistics services, which Alkagesta intends to utilise.
Orkhan Rustamov, Alkagesta's CEO, stated that the company is proud to join Geneva's tradition of trading excellence. He added that Alkagesta aims to play a constructive role in the transition to cleaner fuels, collaborating with the Swiss ecosystem and international partners to promote responsible and sustainable growth.
The new Geneva biofuels desk will coordinate closely with Alkagesta's existing operations, which include sourcing, storage, and compliance, adhering to standards aligned with those of the European Union. It will also draw upon the company's international banking relationships and established risk management practices.
Alkagesta, founded in 2018, has established partnerships with 28 international banks and operates in 42 countries, facilitating trade flows of over 7 million metric tonnes of commodities annually. The company also manages a logistics network with access to more than 700,000 cubic metres of storage capacity across Europe and Asia.
