Alkagesta, which began in St. Julian's, Malta, in 2018, has become a significant global commodity trading house, as reported by the Malta Independent. The company has expanded its operations to 42 countries, establishing offices in key locations such as Geneva, London, Dubai, and Singapore.

The company's early focus was on enhancing efficiency and reliability in commodity trading, particularly by securing strategic storage locations. A pivotal moment occurred in 2019 when Alkagesta started executing arbitrage petroleum cargoes east of Suez and diversified into fertilizer trading, shifting from a regional to a global player.

By 2023, Alkagesta had strengthened its European storage network, and in 2025, it entered Singapore, a major hub for global petroleum trading. These strategic moves provided the company with optionality, enabling it to balance markets and capture arbitrage opportunities with its storage tanks and time-chartered vessels.

The Malta Independent noted a significant increase in Alkagesta's trading volumes, from 137,000 metric tons in 2018 to over 7.2 million tons by 2024. This growth is attributed to a company culture emphasising unity, ownership, entrepreneurial spirit, and continuous learning, supported by training programmes.

Alkagesta also demonstrated an early commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, publishing its first report in 2021. By 2024, the company had invested in a Used Cooking Oil (UCO) recycling plant, launched a biofuels trading desk, and secured ISCC EU certification, collecting over 1.6 million kilograms of UCO.

Today, Alkagesta's product coverage includes petroleum, fertilizers, petrochemicals, biofuels, and agricultural commodities. The company maintains rigorous governance aligned with international regulations and is supported by 28 global banking partners and 17 local presences worldwide.

Looking ahead, Alkagesta is preparing for the rollout of 0.1% ULSFO supply across the Mediterranean under IMO 2025 regulations and plans to scale its biofuels business globally. The Malta Independent highlighted the company's transformation from a niche Mediterranean operator to a global trading house in just eight years.
