Alkagesta, a commodity trading and bunker firm based in Malta, has become a corporate member of the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA), Ship & Bunker reported. This membership highlights the company's dedication to the bunker market.

The company stated in an emailed statement that joining IBIA reinforces its commitment to the bunker market. Alkagesta's marine distribution director, Mithat Ciftcioglu, described IBIA as a platform for shaping the future of marine energy.

Mr Ciftcioglu also indicated that Alkagesta views this membership as an opportunity to contribute its expertise in structured trade and logistics. The company also aims to learn from others who are equally committed to innovation and compliance within the industry.

In 2025, Alkagesta announced its intentions to supply ultra-low sulphur fuel oil (ULSFO) across the Central and Eastern Mediterranean region. This move was in response to the planned introduction of an emission control area in the Mediterranean.

The firm also established a dedicated biofuel trading desk in Geneva during 2025. Additionally, Alkagesta secured strategic storage capacities at the Horizon terminal located in Singapore, further expanding its operational footprint.

Ship & Bunker noted that Alkagesta's entry into IBIA aligns with its recent strategic developments in the marine fuel sector. These initiatives include expanding its product offerings and geographical reach.

The membership signifies Alkagesta's active participation in industry discussions and developments, particularly concerning marine energy and compliance standards, as reported by Ship & Bunker.
