Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister and Trade Minister, Gan Kim Yong, has affirmed the nation's commitment to fair trade practices. He stated that Singapore, a significant transhipment and trading hub in Asia, does not endorse the use of its infrastructure to circumvent tariffs.
The minister's comments come as Singapore addresses allegations from the United States regarding the rerouting of goods originating from China. These allegations suggest attempts to disguise the origin of products to bypass US tariffs.
Mr. Gan Kim Yong emphasized that Singapore operates by established rules and will not tolerate any form of tariff evasion. This position reinforces the city-state's dedication to maintaining integrity within its extensive trade and logistics networks.
The statement clarifies Singapore's role in global trade, indicating that its status as a major hub does not extend to facilitating practices designed to bypass international trade regulations or tariffs imposed by other nations.
