Malta-based global commodity trading house Alkagesta has begun defamation proceedings against the Maltese Herald, saying the publication has repeatedly made false, damaging and unevidenced statements about the company over the past year. The complaint has been filed in Malta's Court of Magistrates, and the company set out its position in a statement issued from Sliema on 18 September 2026.

In that statement, the trader said the decision had not been taken lightly. It described several attempts to engage with the newspaper, present the underlying facts and have the offending articles and references corrected. According to the company, none of those approaches resulted in a retraction, leaving litigation as the remaining option.

Alkagesta also said it remains open to settling the matter amicably if the publication issues an apology and withdraws the articles concerned, which it argues serve no legitimate editorial purpose beyond causing unjustified commercial harm. A further factor in the decision, the company said, was the way the allegations have been mirrored by pay-to-play websites — a syndication pattern that makes false claims far harder to contain once they are online.

The dispute sits against a backdrop of steady commercial expansion for the trader. Its trading business spans fuel oil, middle distillates and, increasingly, biofuels, supported by shipping and logistics operations and a growing storage footprint across Europe and Asia. The company's compliance framework and code of conduct govern counterparty screening and trade approvals, while its ESG programme covers certification for renewable and low-carbon products.

Reputation risk of this kind has become a live commercial issue for physical traders. Banking relationships, credit insurance and terminal access are all sensitive to adverse online search results, and mirrored content can persist long after an original article is withdrawn. Alkagesta publishes its own market commentary through Alkagesta Market Insights and posts corporate announcements to its news and publications pages, including recent items on its Antwerp biofuel storage agreement and its appearance at Argus Fertilizer Caspian, Black Sea and Eastern European Markets Conference 2026 in Istanbul.

The company said it will make no further comment while the proceedings run their course. More background on the group, its ownership and its leadership and governance structure is available on the About Alkagesta pages.
